Inception Movie Review

In this week’s movie review, we will be looking at the movie Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan, who also directed the very successful movie; Batman: The Dark Knight. The movie Inception takes us into the complex world of the ‘dream,’ through technology which allows one to invade another’s subconscious/dreams. The main actor, Dom Cobb is portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, and plays a skilful thief in the dream world. His job is to steal or extract valuable secrets or ideas from somebodies subconscious.

I was attracted to this movie the moment I saw the trailer. I just HAD to see it. Which I eventually got around to doing and wow, was it worth it. After seeing The Dark Knight a few times, I just had to see what Christopher Nolan had done to keep to the standard he set in The Dark Knight. Again, I was just as impressed with music choices, cut scenes, camera angles and overall continuity the film produced. The movie held its suspenseful scenes quite well and never lost the attention of the audience. Leonardo DiCaprio played his character extremely well, and it made me realize that he’s not as bad as acting as everybody makes him out to be. (I still think he lost his rep. in Titanic :P )

Dicaprio played alongside Ellen Page, who was made famous in the well written movie, Juno. Ellen plays the role of Ariadne, a young architect hired by DiCaprio’s team to design cityscapes for dreams to occur in. Like other movies she’s starred in, Page played her character well both in mellow and action scenes.

I really enjoyed the set on which Inception was shot. Nolan utilized huge, open plan environments to work with, especially in the world of the dream which was entirely dynamic as the characters could adjust and manipulate the world around them. The use of CGI in this film was of pure quality. For example, there is a scene where DiCaprio and Page are walking through the streets of a city Page created in her mind, and she decides to toy with the physics of the city by literally folding it in half. We see this half of the city folding in on top of the other half, to a point where the roofs touch each other, and the actors proceed to walk from one side to the other. (completely against the physics of the real world) This whole concept of the dream world being invaded and used as a tool to steal ideas or thoughts, puts a lot of thought into one’s own mind. Much like the effect The Matrix caused, where people started to question the fact that we could all be living in a ‘dream-like-world.’

DiCaprio mentions a line in the movie which again, turns the great mystery wheel in our minds. He says this: “Dreams feel real while we’re in them. It’s only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.” This line, taken from the trailer of the movie, was what initially prompted me to go watch the movie. The point is that it triggered something in my mind, which made me want to know more about it. This is a theme that I particularly like in movies, and is a theme used exceptionally well by Nolan.

Again, with such a well-made movie, the production body definitely deserved a huge pay-out, which incidentally is what they got.  The production team worked with a budged of $160 million, and grossed almost $622 million. The movie itself has received almost 100% positive reviews from all around the world.

I haven’t been too impressed by new movies in the past year, but this has definitely set a standard as both an action, sci-fi and mysterious movie. Being such an impressive movie all-round, I have to give this movie a 10/10
