+SSG+Dup – Returns to StarCraft

With the DoGaming Championships over and 2013 drawing to a close, We caught up with +SSG+ Dup, captain of the Serenity team to poke his brain…

You recently took a brief venture into Dota 2, How’d that work out and why did you come back to StarCraft?

It was definitely a fun experience. When you play dota 2, you share victory, you share defeat, you can play casually and still have a good laugh with mates. That’s what drew me away from Starcraft, when you celebrate a win in Stacraft you celebrate on your own. But in the end, after playing so much Starcraft and going into dota, it sort of feels like you don’t have as much control as you’d like. I can’t watch the replay and check for a particular timing that caused me to lose because next game will be a whole different set of heroes against what may be a whole new team with a different game plan. It’s a team game and I don’t feel half as in control of the outcome as I do when I’m playing Starcraft where it’s just me and my opponent, and I missed that.

You recently took part in the Insta-Clash Cup, how’d that go?

It could have gone better, I went through the first round convincingly against an opponent that I’ve previously lost to, so I was happy about that but I was taken out in the next round by a better player. Hopefully I learn my lesson and improve enough for the next time around.

How would you rate your performance?

I’ve definitely got a lot of things I’d like to work on, I’ve changed my playstyle quite a lot recently so I feel that I need to focus on relearning what I’m vulnerable to again and improve on myself.

What are your current goals in respect to StarCraft?

Currently I’m really just trying to enjoy the game and focus on improving myself. My aim is to get into diamond league again as zerg and hopefully masters league from there. It’s going to take some time and dedication but that’s what it’s all about anyway.

What is your training schedule looking like?

For now I want to put aside time for 3 ladder games a day, some practice between team mates and watching my replays.

I feel it’s more important to look at each game and learn from it than to crank out 100 games without improving from each.

You are the captain of +SSG+Serenity, how’s that going?

A little like herding cats I must say 😀 When you’re playing a team game it’s easier to get everyone together and focus on improving together and helping each other. Not so for StarCraft as in 1v1 it’s every man for himself. To get everyone online on the same evening does prove difficult with personal schedules taking priority. I can’t say I don’t feel a sense of pride when I see one of my team mates claiming a victory though, and it’s definitely a great feeling to be part of something growing.

What are your goals for the team?

I hope that we can take a decent foothold within the South African Starcraft 2 community. I’d like for newer players to come to us and look for advice, and older players to come to us to look for challenges. VnR could use the competition 😉

As of 11 November, there is a big balance patch to StarCraft, care to comment on any of it?

Since switching to zerg, I must say I’m relieved about the widow mine nerf. Many hairs were pulled out after lose huge clumps of my army to a couple well placed widow mines. I won’t say they were impossible to deal with before as Pro players have proved, but I’m definitely relieved that Terran has to put some work in again 😉 As for the oracle and tank buff, I’m not too worried yet, but who knows what people will come up with. I’m quite excited to see what zerg can get done with the roach burrow speed. Especially good old Ryland.

Who is your favorite professional player and why?

At the moment it has to be the Zerg, Evil Geniuses’ Suppy. He plays a great selection of styles from aggressive to defensive and seldom loses his cool when things get really bad. He may not be the best player in the world but he’s a hardworking player with a great temperament. There’s definitely a lot to learn from watching Suppy handle victory humbly and defeat graciously.

What do you think of the 1v1 map pool additions?

I like the new maps. They seem to continue on with the blizzard fad of making maps bigger and bigger with less room for super early cheese.  Works out perfect for what I’m looking to achieve.

Many complain that Zerg’s swarmhost/infestor/corruptor style vs Protoss is overpowered, do you take advantage of this style and what can you comment on it?

I personally don’t at the moment, but I must say I’d like to dabble in it some day. I don’t think it’s all that overpowered as much as very frustrating for Protoss to deal with at the moment. I feel like it forces them to play a style they’re not used to playing. I don’t think it’ll be too long before the Protoss “think tanks” figure out a way to get around it or kill it off before it becomes something to worry about.

Anything to add? Any shoutouts?

Just a thank you for the interview and a thanks to TheVovo and TheHam for housing a StarCraft team within a battlefield clan. I hope we can be a team that makes SSG proud.
