STARGATE WATCH!!!

To most people, Stargate is that above-average Egyptian-themed sci-fi action flick from Roland Emmerich, the guy who gave us an exploding White House and a badly-redone Godzilla. To nerds, Stargate is a long-running TV series with multiple spinoffs, English-speaking aliens, and Macgyver himself leading the pack. For the latter category, this is the watch for them: it’s patterned after the eponymous alien portals from the franchise.

The Stargate watch comes to us from Hungarian designer Laszlo. Tapping the central touchscreen makes the outer chevrons lock in the coordinates for the hours, while the inner track dials in the minutes. It’s surprisingly easy to read, even for someone who hasn’t done a dissertation on System Lord politics.

Antec LanBoy Case is Made for Super Air Cooling

High performance PCs require good cooling, and sometimes that requires a case that can take a fan or two.  So if you feel uneasy about using water cooling, this one will be for you.  Antec has just revealed its latest case that’s built for airflow, called the LanBoy Air. It looks like a regular PC tower in shape, but what sets it apart is that it doesn’t have any solid walls. Instead, the case is composed of framed mesh panels that fans can be bolted up against.  Aparently, there are five 120mm fans – two on the front panel, two on the side, and one in the back – as well as room for up to 10 more fans.  The case is somewhat customizable, so you can change the positions of the drive bays or the power supply to where it’ll work best for your rig. Antec says that this design can result in over 34,000 combinations.  The LanBoy Air costs R1500 and is available in red, yellow, and blue trims.

The World’s 1st Gaming Keystroke Keyboard

Last week  Gigabyte revealed the “world’s first” gaming keystroke keyboard, the Aivia K8100. Arriving in black, yellow and red, the new keyboard boasts four primary features– touch and slide volume control, 20 anti-ghosting keys, GIGABYTE’s GHOST macro engine, and an enhanced ergonomic gaming keystroke keyboard design.

According to the company, the keyboard offers three different built-in keystroke forces–70-grams, 60-grams, and 50-grams. The most common gaming control functions such as WASD, Ctrl, Space, and the arrow keys are assigned the 70-gram weight setting. Keys typically pressed by the little finger–including Tab, Caps-Lock and Shift buttons–are assigned to 50-grams. The 60-gram setting is seemingly left open for user-defined assignments.

Originally seen in the M8000X Extreme Macro Gaming Mouse, Gigabyte’s GHOST Maco Engine allows the user to program special macros that can travel with the device. “4-Mbits on-board memory enables up to 100 programmable macro sets, of which 25 (5 sets of 5) can be stored on the keyboard and launched with hot keys. Gamers are able to switch between pre-defined key or button easily,” the company said.

As for 20 anti-ghosting keys, this allows the end-user to press up to 20 keys simultaneously without receiving interference from other keys– the typical USB keyboard is limited to around 6 simultaneous buttons.

No pricing available atm.

Intel Charging R350 to Unlock CPU’s Full Features

Want to use all the capabilities of your CPU?

Software upgrade vouchers are something that we’re used to. A simple code can either unlock previously dormant features or it can initiate a download of upgrade files. This sort of system is used for games and even operating systems like Windows 7. But now it’s being put to use in Intel CPUs.

An Engadget reader spotted on the shelves at Best Buy a R350 upgrade card that claims to upgrade the processor inside the Gateway SX2841-09e, which is a Pentium G6951 dual-core LGA1156 Clarkdale processor.

The upgrade card appears to promise an upgrade from 2- to 4-way multi-task processing and a larger cache, speeding up data-heavy applications. Specifically, that means the enabling of HyperThreading and an extra 1MB of L3 cache for a total of 4MB.

To “unlock” the full features of this CPU, a user must go to the Intel upgrade website and install the upgrade application. From there, a PIN from the upgrade voucher must be entered for the upgrade before the reboot completes the process.

Right now, this “upgradeable” CPU is being tested in select markets, so it likely isn’t a sign of things to come – at least not in the enthusiast high-end.

How do you guys feel about this? I think its a great idea.  Would come in handy when buying a new rig.  One doesn’t always have the cash to buy the best cpu available. And if one is then able to unlock more mhz/cores/cache later it would be great.

Trophy Tank Defense System Goes Live in Israel

Through my whole gaming career, especially in the Battlefield franchises, tanks have allways been my favourite and I have always kept a close eye on up and coming developments.

And the new Trophy defence system seems to be the latest and greatest development in tank history.

So what is the Trophy System? Trophy seeks and destroys missiles and grenades before they could make impact with the tank.

Nations across the world spend untold sums of money developing weapons to strike down their enemies, be it with heavy force or with unmanned droned machines. Many of these nations have also spent great sums of money on their defensive technologies to protect their troops from enemy weapons.

Late last year the Israeli Defence Forces announced the new system for their tanks that is called the Trophy Active Protection System. The system was not in operation at the time but was undergoing extensive testing.

The Trophy system was developed by Rafael Armament Development Authority and funded by the Israeli Defense Ministry. The System makes use of F/G band fire control radar that utilizes four flat panel antennas that could be mounted to Tank or APC, giving the system a 360-degree field of view. The system detects incoming missiles of RPG’s and then calculates the point of impact as well as the weapons type.

Once the weapon is identified and the point of impact calculated the system fires a small “neutralizing agent” which is said to be a mist of small pellets like a shotgun would fire and destroy the incoming threat. The entire system was designed with two things in mind, protecting the tank or vehicle and its crew and protecting any ground force that would be close by.

The Associated Press reports that the Trophy system has now been officially implemented by Israel. If the system can prove itself functional on the battlefield, it could change the face of ground combat and tip the balance of power in Israel’s favour if the nation goes to war against Hezbollah or other militant groups in the region.

The system is said to cost about $200,000 per installation and the amount is described as a small fraction of the cost of a tank which is $5000000. Rafael, the company behind Trophy, expects that the system will generate lots of international interest and the firm expects customers to order the Trophy system in the coming years.
